Orientation aid for the blind

The orientation device for the blind

  • helps them to orientate when moving and sporting (walking, sport activities ie. jogging)
  • minimizes their dependency on the surrounding, accompanying persons or leading dogs
  • improves their safety (town, nature)

The device meets following demands:

  • enables to detect obstacles within the profile of a whole body (a classic white cane can do it only up to knees)
  • is universal as for language ie. global
  • is supplied with GPS module for global orientaion
  • information is not transferred through ears because hearing is the important sensorial channel and its blocking is dangerous
  • can be used solely or as a supplement of guide dog or as a supplement to a classical white cane
  • as a serial product has to be practical, fully functional, reasonable priced
  • is tested by the blind people to serve them fully

The project of development is now in the 2nd phase (making the first prototype) - it will be finished by June 2010 and is funded mainly by Vodafone Foundation.

The process of development is conducted by blind investigator Mr. Donat in co-operation with the Czech Academy of Science and Czech Technical University.
